How it works

Tipping norms vary: 15–20% in the US and Canada; 10% in the UK where service is not already included; 10–15% in the UAE and GCC on top of any service charge; nothing expected in Japan.

Formula

Tip = bill × %
Each = (bill + tip) ÷ people

Worked example

86.50 bill, 15% tip, 2 people: tip 12.98, total 99.48, 49.74 each.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Convention is pre-tax in the US; most people tip on the total shown because it is simpler. On a 10% tax the difference on 15% is 1.5% of the bill.

Is a service charge the same as a tip?

A discretionary 10–12.5% service charge in UK restaurants replaces the tip. In the UAE a 10% service charge is often mandatory and goes to the house; staff tips are separate.
