How exchange rates work
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices on the interbank market. Consumers never get it exactly: providers quote a buy rate below it and a sell rate above it, and the gap is their margin. The cheapest way to compare any two providers is to ask how much of the destination currency arrives for a fixed amount sent.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the rates come from?
Open mid-market rates from open.er-api.com, refreshed daily. They are indicative reference rates, not the rate any bank or exchange house will give you.
Why is my bank's rate different?
Banks and exchange houses add a margin of 0.5–4% to the mid-market rate and may add a fee. Use the send-money calculators to measure the true cost of a transfer.
Which Gulf currencies are pegged?
AED (3.6725), SAR (3.75), QAR (3.64), OMR (0.3845) and BHD (0.376) are fixed to the US dollar; KWD floats against a basket. Their rates against INR, PKR, GBP etc. move only because the dollar moves.
How often should I check rates before sending money home?
Daily for volatile pairs (EGP, PKR, TRY, NGN). Set a rate alert in your transfer app for your target rate.
